National Voters Day in Mizoram PDF Print E-mail

Along with the rest of the country, the first National Voters DayNational Voters Day was celebrated across Mizoram following the directions of the Election Commission of India. The Governor of Mizoram, Lt. Gen. (Rtd) MM Lakhera PVSM AVSM VSM graced the State celebration held at Vanapa Hall, Aizawl as Chief Guest. A number of the State’s elected representatives, government officials, students, NGO’s were present on this occassion. Addressing the function, the Governor stated that the foundation of democracy lies with Voters, and that sound democracy is established by citizens aware of their duties and responsibilities to exercise their right to vote.

He said that the percentage of voter turn out during elections is very low in several States that it hampers the sense of true democracy. The citizens of India, attaining 18 years of age and above should ensure that they have the EPIC card and exercise their right to vote during elections, he added. The Governor said that Mizoram is fortunate to have organisations like the Mizoram Peoples Forum (MPF) which to a large extent ensure free and fair election and also contain the involvement of money during election campaigns. He urged all the citizens to observe free and fair elections which will allow them to determine the correct political makeup and future policies of the government.

The Governor felicitated three Districts namely Champhai, Saiha and Serchhip Districts who has achieved 100% EPIC coverage in their respective Districts. EPIC cards were also distributed to 20 selected newly eligible and registered voters. Winners of Inter-College debate conducted to mark the culmination of the year long Diamond Jubilee celebration of the Election Commission of India, were also fecilitated.

The State’s Chief Election Officer Pu K. Riachho IAS who presided over the function highlighted the significance and history of the Election Commission of India and also the process of elections in India. The Jt. CEO Pu Lalhmingthanga proposed vote of thanks.

Reports of National Voters Day celebration from different Districts have been pouring in. District Capitals, ERO, AERO and BLO levels observed the Day in their respective areas and distributed EPIC cards to new voters.
